Decontamination of Chemical Warfare Agents Now a Reality After Recent Chemical Attacks in Syria

The ongoing chemical gas attacks in Syria have many around the world wondering what more can be done to help protect civilians and those responding to these terrible chemical agents and weapons. Early reports indicated the compound in the most recent attacks was sarin, a highly volatile organophosphorus compound, that can be lethal at low concentrations and exposure.

Fort Myers, FL – The ongoing chemical gas attacks in Syria have many around the world wondering what more can be done to help protect civilians and those responding to these terrible chemical agents and weapons. Early reports indicated the compound in the most recent attacks was sarin, a highly volatile organophosphorus compound, that can be lethal at low concentrations and exposure. Symptoms are wide ranging, but the victim typically suffocates and dies.

The chemistry of sarin is such that it can be broken down by metal oxides and hydroxides through hydrolysis. This is advantageous because many metal oxides such as magnesium oxide are safe, unlike some of the toxic or corrosive decontamination formulations. Since sarin is highly volatile, being able to knock-down the vapor is critical for a response product to be effective. Traditional sorbents are not going to be useful against the vapor clouds reported in the recent incidents and corrosive chemicals are not going to help the people in the immediate vicinity of lingering vapors.

There is a product developed in the United States and distributed around the world called FAST-ACT that has the necessary design and performance capabilities for sarin gas attacks. This product uses metal oxides, including magnesium oxide, as the adsorbent and has delivery methods that can counter chemical vapors in the form of an “extinguisher” like cylinder. The product has even been evaluated against G series agents, including sarin gas, for chemical warfare decontamination.

FAST-ACT is a versatile chemical neutralizer that can be used against a variety of chemicals, not just chemical warfare agent. The technology, called high surface area metal oxides, was originally developed for elevated temperature destruction of chemical warfare agents, but the researchers found that the reaction mechanisms were also occurring in ambient conditions. This set the researchers down the path of developing a broad-spectrum HAZMAT response product that ultimately became FAST-ACT.

The product is available in more than just the “extinguisher” style delivery systems. The same FAST-ACT metal oxide sorbent is also in shaker style packaging, pails, and mitts. All of these systems can be used to counter sarin gas, but the “extinguisher” style pressurized cylinders are well designed to quickly attack vapors in enclosed spaces.

Sarin has not been the only reported chemical used in the Syria attacks. Chlorine, mustard gas, tear gas, and other noxious chemicals have all been suspected at one time or another. FAST-ACT’s capabilities extend to a wide variety of chemistries that would be helpful against these and other known of unknown chemical releases.
